Default The irony is that/Ironically (enough)

Lost in my own musings and after a bit of dabbling with E-Prime, I thought I could reword the following Standard English passage in (a) into an “acceptable” E-Prime passage in (b) as follows:

(a)“The irony is that Thoreau was in fact surprisingly well read in social and historical contexts [...]”
(b)“Ironically enough, Thoreau appeared surprisingly well read in social and historical contexts [...]”

Does (b) ever stand a chance of passing for an E-Prime statement? Thank you for your response.
