Default Can't convincingly render it into E-Prime

"The idea seems to have been that a nick was a narrow and precise marker, so that if something was in the nick it was precisely where it should be."

I picked this up while perusing the World Wide Words website. I attempted to translate it into E-P as follows:

"[The word] Nick conveyed the idea of a narrow and precise marker..." and then silence as I struggled for words to complement it.

Can the forum members and users please help me with it?

Someone identified a nick as a narrow and precise marker, so if something got caught in the nick, then that something fell into the place where it belonged.
